Arthritis Diet

Eliminate nightshades. Among the most common diet claims is that it can eliminate nightshades that include eggplants, potatoes, tomatoes and most peppers in order to relieve arthritis. Perhaps this diet is not harmful; however, no studies have been reported to support it.

Switching fats. One of the recognized correlations between food and arthritis is that presence of omega -6 fatty acids will increase its inflammation and with omega-3 fatty acids it will be reduced. Limit your intake of meat as well as poultry and increase your consumption of cold-water fish like mackerel, trout, salmon and sardines. For salad dressings and also cooking, replace canola, olive and flaxseed oils with sunflower, corn and safflower oils.

Gin-soaked raisins. Many people claim that this works but experts asserted that there is no evidence. Grapes as well as raisins have anti-inflammatory compounds but not in quantities which are considered to be therapeutic. The gin can relieve dull pain but drinking excessively will interfere with the health benefits of both nutrients and vitamins. Eventually an entire new set of problems are introduced.

Green tea. Drinking 3 to 4 cups of green tea everyday will help individuals with RA. Studies which have been funded by the Arthritis Foundation presented that providing the polyphenolic compounds in the green tea to mice will substantially decrease the occurrence and severity of RA. But these results have not yet been confirmed by human studies.

Alkaline diet.  The alkaline diet believes that both RA and OA are the results of excessive acid. The foods which should not be included are citrus fruits, most grains, nuts, sugar, coffee and red meat. This diet will only be followed for a month. This could make people feel better since they will lose weight and reduce the stress on the joints that will ease the pain. This diet will also eliminate a good number of vitamin C resources. But no studies have supported this so far.

Dong diet. This kind of restrictive diet depends heavily on vegetable except for the tomatoes. This also eliminates lots of similar foods in the alkaline diet. However, there is no evidence that this has an effect on arthritis.

Vegetarian diet. Several individuals report about the improvement of symptoms yet the evidence is mixed. A small study of persons with RA has showed that there is improvement within four weeks. The follow-up studies of people who maintained the diet showed that there is continual improvement after eighteen months.
